The 1st Generation of K-pop (1990-2003)

Seo Taiji and Boys debuted in 1990 

The first generation of K-pop started in 1990 to 2003. With famous groups such as Seo Taiji & Boys, Sechs Kies, Shinhwa and many more. This started a new wave of music with rap and sync choreography taking music to a different level in South Korea. With their unique music videos and dances, this is what led to K-pop to what it is today. 
The most well-known K-pop group were Seo Taiji & Boys debuting in 1991 and releasing their famous song “Come Back Home” in 1995. Which has led other groups to cover their own versions of the song in recent years. Being BTS a well-known boy group and TXT. 

Seo Taiji & Boys have built the K-pop path, showcasing that people who have the desire to be in the industry of singing, rapping and dance, can live their dreams of becoming an idol and making a name for themselves. 

Here is a video performance of Seo Taiji & Boy's performance of Come Back Home in 1995. What gave them fame was the attitude that they gave off during the performance with the style and dance.

Having debuted in 1991, Seo Taiji & Boy's are now inactive in the industry. But in recent years as mentioned in the beginning of the blog new K-pop groups have covered their own version of the famous song Come Back Home, groups such as BTS and TXT. Introducing younger fans to the older generation of K-pop with timeless music that does not get old.

TXT (Debuted in 2019) performed their version of Come Back Home in a live performance in 2022. 


Seo Taiji & Boys paved the way for K-pop, leading many young generations after them to pursue the idol dream. This also led to those becoming successful K-pop artists in their groups (Sechs Kies, Shinhwa and many more) bringing a different style of K-pop to the public and broadening K-pop music. Sechs Kies debuted in 1997 and Shinhwa debuted in 1998, which also followed up a chain of inspiring even more young artists to become idols in the later future.  Creating the 2nd Generation of K-pop 2003 - 2012.

F rom 2003 to 2012 was the era of the new K-pop, widening K-pop internationally. This was also the time in which YouTube was created on February 14 th , 2005. A platform where anyone could upload videos of their interests, music, make-up and many more.  This created a huge opportunity for K-pop, to be able to upload their music videos on this platform, creating a bigger following and gaining new fans from all over the world, w ith its eccentric style of music, dance and fashion. The 3rd Generation of K-pop (2012 - 2017)

2 012 – 2017, the 3 rd generation of K-pop. Taking K-pop to a whole new level of recognition, making K-pop well-known in Western countries. From 2009 - 2012 this was the time K-pop took the world by storm as mentioned in my blog post “The 2 nd Generation of K-pop” , with it creating a whole new path for future artists and thus being generation 3! This generation was well-known by artists such as EXO, BTS, Twice, Blackpink, GOT 7, Seventeen and many others!
