The 2nd Generation of K-pop (2003 - 2012)

From 2003 to 2012 was the era of the new K-pop, widening K-pop internationally. This was also the time in which YouTube was created on February 14th, 2005. A platform where anyone could upload videos of their interests, music, make-up and many more. This created a huge opportunity for K-pop, to be able to upload their music videos on this platform, creating a bigger following and gaining new fans from all over the world, with its eccentric style of music, dance and fashion. Groups such as Big Bang, 2NE1, Girls Generation and the famous singer that went viral, PSY, with his infamous song “Gangnam Style” took the world by storm.

Some few other songs that went viral during these years may ring a bell to you. Big Bang - Fantastic Baby, 2NE1 - I Am the Best, Girls Generation - I Got a Boy, Super Junior - Mr Simple and many many more. It was a time when K-pop was starting to get recognition for its out-of-the-world music videos and intense dances.

Here are links to their music videos - Big Bang, 2NE1, Girls Generation and Super Junior.

Big Bang debuted in 2006

Even though K-pop was still lowkey during the years between 2003 - 2007, the fanbase of it was growing remarkably. Creating a name for itself and attaining the attention of more people from around the world.
K-pop became a viral sensation in 2009 – 2012. Having YouTubers or Teens react to their music videos. This even expanded the name for K-pop making it well-known to people who were not familiar with it. Displayed at the bottom are images I have collected from a YouTube video  "YouTubers React to K-pop" and they give their honest opinion on K-pop.

"Just like colourful chaos. Can we call it colourful chaos?"

“YouTubers React to K-pop” by REACT in 2013.

"It was bright colours, dancing, and stuff I don't understand."

The comments that were given by the Youtubers were also my reaction when watching K-pop videos for the first time. It was funny, different, chaotic, colourful and catchy, compared to other music videos I have seen before. At first, you may be thinking " But I do not understand their language" but you must admit their music is good, to the point the song gets stuck in your head for days before you start searching up the group and finding out more new groups within the world of K-pop. This generation was also known to have created the fandom light stick. A product that is dedicated to a specific group, was so artists in events could spot their fans who were in a massive crowd. This iconic idea was created by an artist named G-Dragon, part of the Big Bang. This created something that years later new K-pop groups started to do so that they also could spot their own fans at concerts and events, making something so simple and meaningful to those who have it.
Generation 2 was what started K-pop to go internationally, as mentioned YouTube was invented in 2005 it created a huge opportunity for K-pop to expand itself.
